weekend pics

by december 5th (the arrival of sinterclaus) my home is already filled with decorations, the smell of a douglas fir tree, and christmas music.

instead of picking out a christmas tree we spent most of our time contemplating whether or not to get another cat then spent a few hours at the spca.  there are so many kittens and cats needing a home, it was heartbreaking to be there.  how do you choose?  we gravitated towards two boys - 'abba' is a brown tabby and 'sam' is a grey tabby. we did put an application in for one of them.  through all of this, i couldn't stop thinking of mikey.  i felt like i was doing mikey wrong, you know?  it didn't feel quite right.  mikey was such a remarkable cat that no other cat could possibly replace him.  my boys feel badly for loki and think he is lonely at home, especially with my working more hours.  i know they are right.

i sorted through photos of mikey as i want to make an album to honour our time with him, we were very lucky to have him.  have you heard of pinhole press?  there's been a lot of buzz about them in the blog world and martha featured them in her december magazine issue.  they have great ideas to showcase your four-legged loved one.  i can't wait to get started on the album.

while visiting pinhole press, i browsed their holiday card selection.  so, although i don't have decorations up or a tree picked out, i did steal one or two of their brilliant ideas and put together a few options for christmas cards.  i couldn't help myself, mikey brought us such joy, what do you think of this option (it was taken christmas day 2008)?

the spca was our major outing this weekend as we spent most of our time at home.  kai and i had some serious time on the sofa, chatting, playing, wrestling, cuddling.  i loved it.  instead of becoming less cuddly as i am told happens around the age of 8, he has done the opposite.  he seeks out hugs and cozies up to me on the sofa whether we are reading or watching a movie. this weekend we indulged and watched two movies, the tale of desperaux and cars 2 - both were incredibly well done with great messages for kids.

kai had a friend over for most of the weekend which freed me up to spend a good amount of time sorting and tidying.  i picked up an outdoor storage cabinet which will be the new home for kai's soccer balls plus other outdoor stuff he owns.  this has made extra room in the hallway closet.  hmmm, i may be able to fit another pair of new shoes in there, now that i think about it!

stefan seemed to live in the kitchen this weekend.  he cooked up a whole chicken with roasted potatoes and asparagus.  i had been craving this one for awhile now.  he also made a big pot of pasta sauce and banana cake!  i already know it, i am very lucky.  stefan will write more about his weekend kitchen happenings on his blog so keep an eye out for his post.

here are some scenes of the weekend:

i am a bit obsessed with organization.
reflection of the living area from the convex mirror; tidy yes? but not always!
stefan picked up candles, he's the candle and soap buyer in our family
i think kai may possess my organizing gene; as i was tidying up i noticed this little vignette :)

the sofa kai and i spent much time lounging on during the mornings
kai having fun with the box the outdoor cabinet came in; i love that a box is still interesting for an 8 year old
i found the idea for the potatoes and asparagus here
