weekend pics

fur seals, macarons, meatballs, and sunny skies made for a great weekend.

kai and i were treated to a behind the scenes visit with seal lions and fur seals.  i am so glad our sweet friend patrycja thought about us to accompany her to the aquarium.  a friend of hers volunteers there and is so passionate about these animals that she puts in full-time hours to care for them.  and she moved all the way from poland to do so; isn't she incredible?  she was infectious with her passion of these very adorable animals.  she says that her payment is in seal kisses, literally!  i loved that we had the opportunity to see the animals out of the water, up close, and interacting with their human friends.

so adorable, don't you want to take him home?

kai kept his hands out of sight; apparently fur seals are curious and like to bite!

patrycja hid her hands too!

the sea lions were humongous!

a hug, too adorable!

after a stroll in stanley park and lunch at carderos we treated ourselves to macarons from soirette, a new pastry shop. it is located in the coal harbour neighbourhood next door to stanley park.  soirette is a little jewel box of a shop filled with delicate macarons and organic tea.  each macaron we snacked on was full of flavour, but my favourites were the lemon and caramel fleur de sel.  i plan to visit again, it was the perfect indulgence.

i picked up a box of macarons for stefan who had to work the saturday

on sunday while kai was at his snowboarding lesson, stefan and i went snowshoeing. we went further up the mountain to take advantage of the views. it was the first clear day i had on the mountain; so much nicer than sitting in front of the television watching the superbowl! we had a fabulous early dinner at altitudes bistro where kai ate an entire adult burger (it was huge and i didn't think he would finish it all), we caught glimpses of the superbowl game (kai was cheering for the giants because daniel radcliffe is a fan), and i had the most delicious tea (mint tea with vanilla vodka and creme de cacao).

one more steep climb for the views!

my mom sent a care package full of meatballs!  the three of us love her meatballs, polpetti in italian.  they are so good that our friends covet them.  the recipe is a secret italian one that i am not allowed to share ;)
