sodermalm's farmer's market

i never thought i would experience such joy surrounded by fresh, just picked, fruits and vegetables. thank you farmer's market!

you see, produce in stockholm supermarkets can be pretty dismal.  brown edged cauliflower, bruised oranges, soft potatoes, and moldy onions to name a few.  that's not all, they sell cooked produce - corn and beets - that's been vacuumed wrapped!  when the supermarket brings in seasonal produce, it's good.  otherwise i'm relying on luck whenever i go grocery shopping.

our neighborhood, sodermalm, has its very own farmer's market - august to october - on katarina bangata street which is such a lovely street to stroll.

the produce was exploding with colour.  we found organic and locally produced vegetables and fruit as well as jams, honey and cheese.  kai wondered if they would have a sausage stand like back home and they sure did.  it was so delicious we bought a couple of packages to freeze and cook up at home.  oh, and the tomatoes actually smelled like tomatoes!

i think a few more visits to the market will be in our future.

sorry for the quality of the photos, all taken with my iphone.

and did you notice that pic of the crayfish?  it's a thing here in sweden to eat crayfish while singing silly drinking songs followed by drinking, of course.  the drink of choice is beer and schnapps (i learnt that i am not a fan of the latter).  all the while you are wearing a party hat and sometimes a bib is provided :)

we joined the festivities at nya carnegiebryggeriet...

stefan studying the lyrics while getting his beer ready to chug.  petter is standing by.

our happy neighbours... anyone can break out in song and others will happily join in
shopping the farmer's market followed by an evening with friends eating crayfish... it was a good day.
