you say tomato, i say kumato

earlier this spring i discovered a new tomato.  perhaps you have heard of it, a kumato?  it is not the tasteless variety you would normally find in the supermarket during the winter months.  a kumato is a tomato with a distinct colour - brownish (a mix of brown, red, green).  although it may not look appetizing, i was drawn to it because it reminded me of an heirloom tomato. apparently, it is developed through the crossing of wild and domestic tomatoes, without genetic modification.

kai and i have been loving this brown tomato.  it has a stronger flavour than red tomatoes with a sweeter taste.  kai eats it up in salads and on its own with a little bit of sea salt (his mediterranean side coming through!).  it may not be red but it tastes like a just plucked ripe tomato from my mom's garden, it's that good.

eating tomatoes out of season is usually a disappointment in flavour but the kumato exceeds any expectation of a packaged supermarket tomato.  i assure you, the minute you try the kumato, you will be converted.   at work, i was asked often 'what is that?' and now a few of my colleagues are converts.  they are delicious.
