weekend pics (part 2, water fun)

the weather was very hot this bc day long weekend and to help cool us down we spent time in the water! it was just the kind of weekend kai loves.

it was our first visit to whytecliff beach and island (thank you for the suggestion patrycja!).  it's such a great spot tucked away on a corner of the howe sound coastline with pretty views of the mountains and passing boats.

it is a huge park (12 acres) but we didn't get a chance to explore much of it, instead we set up camp by the beach.  kai had fun running around and exploring the two great rocks.  one is actually a little island, whyte island, accessible by a rock path at low tide - kai quickly climbed to its peak. he thought it was too cool.

the beach is rocky and the water frigid cold but we all ventured in regardless... it was that hot!  these waters are marine protected and popular with divers.  unfortunately, we didn't see any sea critters.  apparently there are loads.  next time!

there is also a lovely grassy area that makes a great spot for a picnic. it was dotted with families barbecuing and playing bocce.  despite the busyness on this particular day, it was a beautiful and peaceful little spot.

it was also our first time sailing.  it was such a fun activity.  more so than i thought.  you see, i am prone to nausea in any moving vehicle.  we rode on a hobie catamaran which had me a little nervous but once we were moving with the wind i forgot all about being nervous.

i loved it when the winds picked up... speed helps with the sea sickness.  but i quickly learned that the wind is fickle.  we could be moving along fast one moment and slow down completely in another.  we actually had to be pulled to shore by the end of our time on the water because of the lack of wind.

it was great to see vancouver from a different viewpoint, from the waters of english bay. stefan and kai got a chance to steer the boat and trim the sails, much to kai's delight.
