stockholm with h&m - sodermalm island

the best way to experience a city is by walking... and walking we did.  stefan's parents, harm and marion, had us out the door for a daily walk during the week they stayed with us.

we explored a few areas on our own island, sodermalm.

mariatorget

a neighbourhood near our home where, according to stefan, the main attraction is the superb coffee shops.  in particular, nystrom and johan is a favourite as is drop coffee.  but i'd say the square with the sculpture tors fiske, thor slaying a sea serpent, is pretty impressive.  the area also has some great boutiques, small art galleries, and restaurants.

vitabergsparken

we came upon vitabergsparken by accident.  as we strolled and played at the playground, we saw some homes up a hill in the distance and we thought it would provide a lovely view of the city.  and it did.

the area is from the 1700s.  we found a lovely church, a steep hill which kai thinks would be perfect for sledding, paths for walking, and cute preserved red wooden houses.

katarinahissen

for a good vantage point of the stockholm harbour we took harm and marion just a skip and hop from our place... up some steps, down a cobblestoned street (perfect for pics) and then onto the bridge that connects to the katarina elevator.  there we found our view - with gamla stan on one side and djurgarden on the other.  the elevator, which rises 38 meters above slussen, was built in 1883, updated in the 1930s, and is now no longer in service - i hear the bridge will be coming down too so i'm glad we made it.

part three of our stockholm walking tour later today.
