we spent a morning hiking to panagia kakaviotissa, a remote church set into a rocky boulder in the mountains, and it was worth it. its unique characteristic is that it’s roofless. we thought it was pretty cool perched prettily atop a cliff. kai and i lit a candle for my dad. it's so quiet here; we enjoyed the silence surrounded by the mountain ranges.
after our hike, we stopped by kontias for a cold drink and to admire the old style windmills. kontias is said to be one of the best preserved villages of the island, sitting on the saint athanasios hill. some of the windmills have been renovated into hotel rooms. here one can also visit the ouzo distillery but we had to keep going to meet our friends for lunch. i would love to return to see the houses up close.
lemnos has many quaint villages worth visiting, you can't help but pass them by going from a to b... and there is always a view.
in kotsinas, we met our friends for a village lunch. again, a beautiful spread of food right by the water with our favourite people.
after lunch we headed to plati beach near myrina. it might be a tourist resort but it isn't at all crowded. this lovely beach stretches for about 700 meters, the waters are clear and shallow, ideal for kara and leo. again, such fun!
mandellas, in the mountain village of sardes made an idyllic setting for our outdoor evening dinner. all the traditional dishes of the island can be had here... we partook in shared plates such as flomaria pasta with free-range rooster, moustokoulika (pasta boiled in grape must), grilled meats and plenty of fish... all dishes you should try. and guys, the food and wine cost next to nothing.
