travelogue: lemons, greece (part 2 of 4)


myrina, the island's capital,  is stretched between two bays; romeikos gailos and tourkikos gialos. a hike to the top of the castle - a well preserved ruin -  was a bit slow-going fighting against strong winds.  we literally had to hold on tight!  the wind didn't give up once at the top but meandering the castle runis we enjoyed gorgeous views of myrina below and the vast blue waters. 











afterwards, we settled into one of the cafes on the tourkikos gialos side, near the port, to enjoy spanakopita - a savoury spinach pie - and frappes/ice tea.  myrina remains untouched by the passage of time. i loved strolling the labrybrinth streets, visiting the shops... purchasing canned sardines, olive oil and a malocchio.













just a half hour away is the village or moudros where we signed up for a cooking class with marika (visit taste lemnos).  our afternoon with her was a favourite...  cooking in her kitchen, initimate exchanges, making an elaborate pasta, learning to package local cheese and roll it into buns, tomatoes and cucumber from the garden turned into a greek salad.  guys, we even made cheese! sitting down to a feast we helped make, our appetites spoilt with good local food.

when we returned the next day to breakfast at her son's cafe, pezoula, it was like we were old friends with hugs and kisses on the cheek. this to me, is beautiful.












nearby, is fanaraki beach, where we whiled away hours sunning, playing in the waters. and dining under beach umbrellas.









the landscape driving home to hang out with alexia and family in their greek kitchen :)
