travelogue: skåne, sweden (part three, lund and helsingborg)

skåne is the southernmost county of sweden. in the five-plus years that we have been living in sweden, we heard so much about it. in particular, what a great place it is to visit for a summer vacation. so, with our trip to italy cancelled, we took a train westward, then rented a car exploring the coastline, big open pastures, and cozy cafés and restaurants. it was everything we've been told and didn't even think about italy. well, kindof :)

because i am writing this months and months later, i will stick to the highlights, short and sweet. next up, lund and helsingborg!

lund

leaving malmö, we headed north towards lund, a quick stopover, before continuing on to helsingborg to attend kai's friend's birthday party.

the couple of hours we were there, we walked around the city centre, with it's imposing cathedral, popping into a couple of shops, before making a beeline to love coffee roasters, the suppliers to kaffebaren in malmö. on a cute little terrace, we fika-ed.

helsingborg

in helsingborg, we spent a lovely afternoon with jenny and nils and their friends to celebrate erik's 18th birthday. hamburgers and chocolate cake galore!

kai slept over to "party" the skåne way: getting on the boat to denmark to buy booze and drink, not once but twice. kai tells me he took "sips" of various liquor and beer, enjoying the spectacle of seeing his friend drunk.

picking kai up the next day, we spent time with jenny and nils who took us on a tour of their hometown.
walking into town through the forest gave us views of the ocean, the bathhouse, and denmark in the distance. if we weren't living in the middle of a pandemic, we would have loved to drive over the bridge and spend a day in copenhagen.

after the forest, we walked along the water into town. we ate typical swedish fare that we have come to love: salmon, mashed potatoes, and lingonberry sauce. we arrived just in time before a summer shower fell from the skies. then, with the rain at bay, for just a short while, at least, we walked to étoile cafe for fika, in a building where jenny's father once lived. then, finally, the sun was shining and we enjoyed some prosecco by the waterfront.

so grateful for a day like this, to spend with friends.
