scootering + scooting

i have enjoyed having my razor a5 lux scooter.  it’s the perfect size, it's light, and the weight limit is 220lbs – so i don't have to watch what i eat!

scootering has been such a favourite activity to do alongside kai.  they have an air of childishness about them that i love.  not only is it keeping me young at heart but healthy too -- riding one provides a good workout (an unexpected benefit!).  despite stefan's resistance to owning his very own scooter i really wanted him to join in on the fun so i bought him the razor a5 lux kick scooter.  now he knows... scooters for adults are cool :)  they bring smiles to strangers too -- i get a kick out of their expressions/comments when they see my little family scootering by.

if you are not scootering, you don't know what you are missing.  i highly recommend you get yourself one!

although vancouver is so lovely during the summer months, we are scooting off again this weekend.  my boys had such fun on the sunshine coast that they are going back this weekend and taking me with them this time.  kai is excited to show me the lake they discovered and because they ran out of time the last time, he wants to do this hike.  and i am more than happy to oblige.

have a lovely weekend.

dropje, a dutch treat

have you ever tasted dropje; the dutch version of black licorice?  i dislike it, a lot.  stefan and kai?  they love it.  kai had his first taste when he wasn’t even three years old… behind my back.  when stefan’s parents visit, they always bring treats which invariably includes dropje for their son.  one day, during one of their visits, kai asked for some dropje and i dutifully said no, following my no candy rule. but he kept insisting and normally i wouldn’t give in (i’m strict that way) but i thought it tastes so foul he’ll just spit it out anyway.  guess what? he didn’t spit it out, he didn’t even flinch!  that’s when i knew he had a taste of it before... and the culprit was his oma (stefan’s mother).  now over to stefan...

stefan and kai in the holland shopping centre

every childhood is associated with some kind of candy.  these are usually unique to the country or region where you grow up.  in my case, growing up in holland the candies i ate in sometimes large quantities were licorice or 'dropjes' in dutch.  in north america, licorice is usually associated with red tubes of some kind of sweet substance that vaguely tastes like the real thing.  nothing could be farther removed from what i am used to however.

in holland, licorice comes in many shapes, sizes and flavors.  the average north american (including connie) hates the taste of black licorice.  thankfully, kai inherited my licorice eating genes so he loves the stuff.  incidentally, the dutch eat about 4.5 pounds of dropjes per year and the dropje market is worth more than $200 million!  it is available in any supermarket, in small baggies, boxes and bulk quantities if you like.  there are also candy stores solely dedicated to licorice, the 'drop-inn' is one of them, i used to visit the one in the local shopping centre of my home town of den bosch on a regular basis. the shop is lined with many bins containing the dozens of types of licorice.  double salt lozenges, sweet little domes (kokindjes), sweet farm animal shapes (boerderijdrop), tangy and salty little tubes (salmiak stokjes) and many, many more are to be found there.  you'd grab a little pointy paper bag, fill it up and pay by weight.  the trick was then to devour it but not eat so much you would get sick.  there would always be a small tin in my mother's kitchen containing licorice as well and it was very usual to have a few sweet and salty treats after dinner in lieu of dessert.

in bc it is not overly hard to find dutch licorice.  i will always make a detour to a dutch store if i know i will be near one and stock up on the real thing.  the holland shopping centre is one such store located in new westminster, i go there when we visit wild rice.  this always makes me giddy with excitement, i will emerge from this shop clutching a small brown paper bag full of licorice and for a moment i am 12 years old again...

beach accessories

i seem to schlep quite a bit of stuff to the beach or pool for the three of us and before i picked up my new beach bag (found on sale for just $30 during this weekend) i would have a few totes to carry.  having just one nicely sized beach bag has turned out to be perfect for chucking everything into it... sarongs (used as towels), reading material, sunscreen, a few small toys for kai to play with in the water or sand, goggles, sunglasses, wallet, and my flippers!  although it isn't the one - i think it's missing some pockets to help organize all the stuff and wish it were brighter - it'll do nicely this summer :)

i cut the neon yarn wrapped tassels off the ends... and it looks much nicer in real life :)
do you own the perfect beach bag?  if not, here are some favourites...

from here... so pretty!

from here... my favourite

from here... another favourite but it's sold out

weekend pics, yurting in whistler!

we need to spend more time in whistler during the summer months. what a wonderful two days we had!

after taking the whistler village gondola up whistler mountain we then decided to cross from peak to peak... but only after i took in some fresh air since the gondola ride made me nauseous and i wasn't too eager to get onto another one.  the peak to peak took us from whistler mountain to blackcomb mountain, 4.4km away.  it is the world's highest lift of its kind, 1427ft above the valley floor.  happily the ride was so much smoother.

once there we hiked through alpine meadows - wildflowers everywhere, the views stunning - and ended up at blackcomb lake, at an elevation of 6293ft.  we took a dip in the lake, well, to be more accurate kai is the only one that took a full body dip, it is a glacier lake and it was freezing!

our hike left us wanting more... next time we want to hike a longer trail as the three of us enjoy a good hike, especially when no bears are spotted... just a couple of grouse.

we spotted a grouse!

after some dinner and gelato in whistler village we headed to our yurt!  it wasn't cozy like these but compared to setting up a tent and sleeping on the ground, it was pretty nice and would stay in one again.  kai thought it was cool.

the next day was spent at lost lake.  such a pretty little spot to bask in the sun, build sand castles, and swim.  we hiked around the lake on a previous trip and would be worthwhile to do so again by bike as there are many trails leading to more stunning views.  but for this trip, lounging suited us perfectly.

hope your weekend was equally wonderful.
