44 and 45 / 52 weeks

week 44

kai: the last pic of kai in vancouver wearing our friend's halloween cyber punk goggles... he now has an idea for next halloween but wonders / hopes, "do swedish kids even have halloween?"

week 45

kai: loki has a habit of sitting on kai's homework as kai is trying to complete it :)  it's kai's first week of school in sweden and thus far he is enjoying it; kids have been friendly and helpful and the teachers kind.  kai has eight subjects, small breaks between classes, and his very own locker.  he excitedly says, "it's like high school for sixth graders."

stockholm weekend pics - gamla stan och vasamuseet

this weekend i was walking on a grey, cold, sun-peeking-out afternoon down cobblestone streets with kai and stefan in gamla stan, the historic old town of stockholm.  our life here in stockholm is just beginning yet feeling like a tourist... with my boys exploring somewhere new.

gamla stan was stunning even in the grey.  upon entering the narrow streets to the heart of this centre i swear my heart beat a little faster; i was excited.   houses are colourful, plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants line the streets, medieval squares (a huge tree was being erected in one, a christmas tree perhaps?) and palatial buildings.

the main attraction on this day was when we happened upon the 'changing of the guard' ceremony.  silly me, i imagined one guard but instead there were many, situated all around the royal palace.  i read that it took almost sixty years to build the castle (the original burnt down in the 1600s), it's the world's largest, and still used for its original purpose.  i guess the latter explains all those guards!

and those guards?  they don't smile.  not even when a group of giggling girls are taking a selfie with him :)

gamla stan is also filled with museums which i hope to explore during my time here. however, the one museum that was at the top of my boys' list to see was vasamuseet, where an ancient sunken battleship is on display.  it's located across the waters on an island called djurgarden (another museum filled place).

we took a chilly ferry ride over and it was certainly worthwhile.  the massive warship was to be the royal family's show of pride when it set sail in august 1628, but quickly turned to embarrassment when the top-heavy ship tipped and sank to the bottom of the water just a few hundred feet away.  over 300 years later, it was found, rescued, and restored.  the museum does a fantastic job in explaining its impressive preservation process (98% of the ship is original) as well as providing a history on what life was like on those 17th century battleships.  let's just say, it was rather harsh!  i probably would have died of claustrophobia, rather than from a cannon ball, if i had to live on any of those decks.

quality of indoor photos are poor... i forgot my trusty lens.

i hope you had a lovely weekend too!

weekend pics - two weeks worth and late!

i am writing this very late weekend pics post from sweden!  let's just say i was a little busy ;)

following is a collection of iphone snapshots of our last week or so in vancouver:
  • friends who fed us; there was curry, pasta salad, sandwiches and soups; stefan didn't have to cook at all
  • saying goodbye at work; it was so. very. hard to leave
  • my birthday came and went without fanfare but there was a lovely meal eaten at west (i am crazy for west, eat there!) and a homemade almond coffee cake for me to devour
  • a pair of warm and cozy boots were bought in preparation for cold swedish winters
  • neighbours came to the door with good wishes and plates of goodies like those gorgeous biscotti
  • halloween happened and i just barely captured my zombie in a photo
  • i underestimated the last minute packing to be taken on the flight with us; it was painful and tears may have been shed
  • we moved in with our friends for three nights; they lavished us with food, a comfy bed, and lots of love
  • saying a tearful goodbye to jude, our littlest cat, who is being looked after by friends while we are away
  • and, the night before we boarded a plane for sweden, stefan played his last gig with threadsafe (see here too)... his sister and friends came out to cheer him on and say goodbye

stockholm?  i've posted a few pics on instagram if you'd like to follow me... "conniespataro".

otherwise, check back here next week with an update of how my boys and i are doing up here in nordic land where the sun sets early, it's already winter temperatures (snow greeted us on our second day!), and cafes line our neighbourhood streets.
