travelogue: oman, into the mountains

the omani mountains, poolside... waking up to refreshing mountain air and incredible views.

the mountain roads to get here... barren with an occasional date palm plantation next to a village.  and guys, the dates are incredible, we couldn't get enough.  we passed by ruins and visited traditional homes with the friendliest omanis.

we drove to the pretty village of misfat al abriyeen, a tiny hilltop village made up of mudbrick houses within an oasis of date palms and pomegranate trees.  the date plantation uses ancient irrigation systems.  we enjoyed some dates here, so good.

we visited another traditional village nearby - predominantly abandoned due to lack of natural resources - that has changed very little over the past centuries.  the people were super friendly showing us their way of life. the grandmother made me laugh.  one of guys was so excited to learn that stefan worked for electronic arts that once we returned home, stefan sent him fifa soccer :)

a cultural tour of the historic city of nizwa, the captial in the early days of islam, takes in the fort with its vast round tower and souk.  the souk is an aladdin's cave, full to the brim with local pottery, textiles and amazing dates.  we also tried halwa pastries here, a sweet dish infused with rosewater... they only had family-size portions and it was so delish we ate the entire thing.

next up... the desert!
