tulum love, part one

my head is still in tulum, mexico.  we spent our days chilling on the beach, visiting mayan ruins, snorkeling in cenotes, exploring the pueblos, and eating the most delicious food. it is one of the most beautiful and peaceful places i have been.


for 7 days we stayed at suenos tulum, our home base for exploring tulum. and it was an excellent choice.  the two women who own the hotel, giovanna and elisabeth, have created a truly laid-back environment.  it is a small 12 room hotel right on the beachfront.  it's design is mayan influenced yet not too kitschy.  the outdoor space was lovely, with places for shade using ochre coloured linens, and a path that leads to the beach in an organic way.  the gorgeous pool was a nice respite from the sandy beach when we needed it. the mexican food served was delicious. and the resident dogs were pretty cool too.  when you think about hotel chains, suenos tulum was the opposite, it felt authentic. it was perfect for us.

the beach was amazing with the softest sand. the water blue. the waves could be huge but nevertheless fun to navigate. i loved being enveloped in the warm caribbean sea. we all did! it was easy to relax into life on the beach.


 

we ate the freshest, most creative food. everything was delicious. the mexican food, in particular, was beyond what i have tasted before with flavours exploding in my mouth. my favourite had to be the fish tacos and the aztec soup.  pure yumminess!

there were also great farm to table restaurants that cook on wood burning ovens. thankfully, they were located just down the street from us. hartwood is owned by a couple of new yorkers (they have a restaurant there too) who source their food locally and have a menu that changes daily - we had the best slice of cake ever. casa jaguar is the newest restaurant in town with great outdoor space, incense burning, and lots of vegetarian fare. needless to say, we ate very well.

  1. how was the no electric living? It looks like you all had a great time, Mel and I so badly want to get away now so you have share notes on how to get down there. Can you send me a high res image of Kai sitting on the hammock, that is such a fantastic photo of him, now we have a wall to put pictures on again.

    1. Thanks for the comment Craig, you are my very first! Stefan was on high res image duty - i am sure he has emailed you a copy by now. No electric living is totally doable and we didn't miss it. Bliss. Looking forward to seeing you in your new home and happy to share more about Tulum.
