visby
love walking the streets of visby, such a feast for the eyes... pastel coloured houses, turrets and spires, cobblestone streets and cute shops. visby is gotland's only town, within a ringed wall from the 12th and 13th centuries.
our first stop was the gulahuset (swedish for the yellow house), a quintessential swedish cafe. i simply couldnt' leave visby without ordering a saffranspannkaka, saffron rice pudding served with cream and dewberry jam. simply the best. if like stefan, saffron isn't for you, then they have a room full of other fika delights like cardamom buns and chocolate cake. pick one and eat out in the courtyard with the birds.
short on time before needing to board the ferry i quickly peeked into a couple of shops i remember enjoying during my last visit. the akantus antique shop, where new things like ceramics, baskets and swedish klippan blankets share space with old things, lovely antiques. h10, a shop and cafe, is where i picked up a cute little vase that brings a smile whenever i catch a glimpse of it. both these places are filled to the brim with gorgeous items for the home.
our lunch was prepared using some of the over 200 varieties of organic crop grown on this farm. it was delicious! all of lilla bjerg is lovely, from it's greenhouse cafe, red barns dotting the land, and the cute farm shop filled with fresh vegetables, honey, spices and handmade goods, all organic.
we sat outside in the yard under the sunshine. you order from the bar and got a simple stone with our number on it and when the waiter brought out our food, wow! we lunched slowly and picked up some items from the shop.
leva kungslador
love this space, just south of visby. we made a few stops here to pick up their bread and/or fika; everything baked in the shop. greenhouses and lovely cozy garden spaces to lounge. there's a farm shop too with soft furnishings, books, cookery and tasty treats too. for the kiddos there's a play forest with hammocks and huts. every inch of leva kungslador has been thoughtfully designed; it's easy to spend hours here.
