nineteen windmills in one area, the oldest windmills in holland, from the 18th century. i've been wanting to visit this place for so long and finally we were there.
tourists love this place and stefan was hesitant to agree to visit but staying overnight so we could visit early was a good plan to avoid the crowds. with the early start, we explored the inside of a couple of the windmills, they show how families lived and worked in the mills. they are more spacious than you'd think, but still small and such clever ways to sleep a large family. stefan, in the end loved the visit, learning about the windmills and their part of a larger water management system to prevent floods. today, they symbolize dutch water management and they are an unesco world heritage site. we even took a boat ride to admire the windmills from the water.
if you want, you can take a two year course to live in one of the windmills. there are only two requirements, that the windmill make 60,000 revolutions a year (but this number could differ, none of us remembers correctly) and that the grounds be presentable. stefan and i briefly considered this as a retirement plan, much to kai's amusement ;)
we then rented bikes to ride along the dyke, through a nearby village and get a bite to eat. more bitterballen!
while kinderdijk is a touristy place, it is a must see. next up, den bosch for family time.
