raising a foodie

i thought about writing this post for a couple of weeks now.  while grocery shopping, kai approached stefan with a bag of brussel sprouts and asked his dad if he would buy them for him.  of course stefan said 'yes' and altered his dinner plans to incorporate brussel sprouts.  i am pretty sure there aren't too many kids who would ask for brussel sprouts for dinner. what do you think?

foodie: (n) a person devoted to refined sensuous enjoyment (especially good food and drink)

kai can be a little foodie rock star.  he loves to eat most things, including crab claws dipped in butter and especially risotto. for the most part, we're pretty healthy eaters. we mostly eat homemade dinners, we munch on loads of fruit for afterschool snack, and we prefer wheat bread. we never buy soda and rarely juice. candy/junk food only enters the house on halloween night (minus good chocolate for the boys and chips for me).  we don’t eat fast food (kai has been to mcdonald’s in spain once while being babysat by his uncle and aunt).  so, when kai is picky i don’t fret over it because i know my foodie rock star will return to me.

stefan and i made a choice early on to feed kai what we feed ourselves.  we want him to appreciate and understand good food – why it’s important, where it comes from, how to enjoy it. i want to create in kai a healthy and passionate attitude about food than i had as a teenager (food was the enemy). as such, stefan has never cooked two different meals, kai’s dinner plate is exactly the same as ours.  our only rule at the dinner table is that kai must try everything on his plate (before, there were too many arguments about finishing one's plate).  we also repeat our favourites, kids like repetition.

we also try to eat dinner together, even if it means a late dinner because kai’s circus class ends at 8pm. sometimes we fail because i/stefan happens to be out for the evening.  i truly believe that warm, happy family meals creates a stronger bond with our children – i love the conversations kai initiates at the dinner table too.  by creating such a tradition, my hope is that when kai is a teenager he will be hardwired to come home for dinner, sit down and talk to us.  and as an added benefit, by eating together every night you raise smart kids - seriously, i read this somewhere!

we tend to stay away from ‘kid-friendly’ restaurants (unless they serve really good food or we’re out in the rural lands and there is no choice).  when we choose a restaurant it’s because we know we’ll love the food and the atmosphere not because it has a kid-friendly label.  our version of fast food is a sushi restaurant.  if we have more time, we head to a casual fine dining restaurant.  white tablecloths and wine glasses on the table don’t scare us away either.  kai has been going to such places since he was a babe in arms.

and all of this does not mean that we’re perfect foodies. before kai, i was pretty sure that any child of mine would never eat a meal that came from a box/can and would not be obsessed with candy.  needless to say, i was naive (i am pretty sure i am not alone here). i will reach for annie’s mac and cheese box when stefan isn’t around, kai will eat cookie cereal or a nutella sandwich for a fast breakfast, and we love our ice cream! one of kai’s favourite meals is annie’s mac and cheese or annie's lentil soup.  we sometimes eat while watching a movie (but we're together, right?).  here’s a confession, i found mac and cheese in my mom’s cupboard – my italian mom who cooks every single thing from scratch. needless to say, i was flabbergasted!

i am aware that some kids are pickier than others and not giving in to their dinner demands  is probably very hard to put into practise.  there is such pleasure in watching your child eat that anything is better than just a raisin.  and of course there is the matter of monies too - eating can be expensive so kid-friendly restaurants are often more doable than a fine dining one.

i think stefan and i have found a pretty good balance for our little family.
sorry, don't remember where i found this photo

ordering italian food

i was chatting with my friend samantha yesterday (she took me grocery shopping to costco, love her!) about the mispronunciation of italian food.  it reminded me of a photo slide show that i saw recently on the web.  if you would like to properly order food in an italian restaurant then take a peek here. these three were my favourites:

bruschetta: brews-keh-tah not "brewshhetta." the "ch" sound in italian is a hard "k." also, this is usually served as an appetizer, which will probably be listed in your menu as  "antipasto"
(appetizer, singular) or under "antipasti" (appetizer, plural), or, erroneously, as "antipasta" (this is not a word).

biscotti/panini: just as an fyi: both biscotti and panini are plural words, for cookies and sandwiches, respectively. if you want just one cookie, or one sandwich, then you'd order a "biscotto" or "panino". either way, you wouldn't say "a biscotti." However, the plural form has become so widespread in America...

pizza margherita is not made with tequila:
pizza margherita is the italian answer to cheese pizza: a tricolor pie made with tomato, basil, and mozzarella. but (and this is nitpicky), note that  margherita is spelled with an "e" and not an "a" — this is what distinguishes it from the mexican drink made with tequila.   marg-EH-rita.

it's a pet peeve of mine and the reason i don't go by my proper italian name, concetta.  when mispronounced, made 'english' it's like nails scratching on a blackboard to my ears.  it's that irritating.  sorry for the little rant :)  i will keep these kinds of posts to a minimum!

jagoda's jewellery

last week i went to a jewellery party hosted by a good friend, patrycja, and her sister gosia.  it was their second annual party but this time they invited the designer to join the festivities.  their talented mom, jagoda, turned her passion into a business.  she began making jewellery 5 years ago and is now teaching courses on the subject.  pretty cool, yes?

jagoda makes fantastic pieces.  everything was hand-crafted and well-made...like little works of art in the form of necklaces, bracelets, rings, earrings and even bookmarks (kai purchased one with his own money).  unfortunately she doesn't yet have a website but you can contact her at jagodadesigns@live.ca for further details.

her collection this year was comprised of silver, amber (from poland), and copper.  i bought a silver bracelet which i know i will wear often because i bought a similar one last year.  what i love about this one is that it's asymmetrical and the round silver discs that dangle are perfect.

i first met jagoda at patrycja's wedding last year. i can't help but share a photo of the gorgeous bride - kai adores her and i am lucky enough to have her as a friend!

weekend pics

stefan was a bit under the weather this weekend so we didn't get up to too much.  kai had his soccer game saturday morning, i did chores about the house, we read, we visited with friends, and attended a foodie event via bicycle (it was too nice out not to ride).  it was a perfect balance of hanging out at home and getting out to do stuff.  it's lovely when it works out that way.

i love that we have made home reading a part of our daily routine.  it's a wonderful way to be together as a family, nice and cozy.

our friends, darrin and alexia, celebrated birthdays but the focus was on their adorable daughter who turned one.

darrin and alexia love chocolate as much as stefan does - we found their stash, it's alot of chocolate!
the vancouver farmers markets event, ripe, celebrates bc farmers and enjoying seasonal food. they are the society that organizes the markets in the city throughout the year - not only do you pick up groceries but the kids can have fun, and there is always some form of entertainment.  such a variety of local food is available this time of year.

a few of our favourite restaurants, campagnolo, rangoli, and meat and bread, served appetizers.  i have to include the menu of the main meal. it was delicious. everything was. i wish you were here to dine with us:

- velvet squash & apple soup with toasty croutons
- caramelized brussel sprouts with gelderman farms' pork crackling
- mixed greens with oil & vinegar dressing
- marinated local tuna with green beans and creamy roasted garlic dressing
- roast broccoli & fingerling potatoes with toasted hazelnuts
- chevre, chard & kale phyllo 'lasagna'

- slow roasted r&b brewery marinated gelderman farms' pork with fall apple & pear compote
the kids corner - kai is figuring out which seed grew the vegetable.
the silent auction - we each bid on an item and were outbid many times so no vase for me, no chopping board for stefan and no glazed pecan nuts for kai

we may not have won any silent auction items but we did get to bring home some lovely flowers!
despite stefan's cold, he managed to cook up a stew from this awesome italian cookbook that was gifted to me.

i hope you had a balanced weekend too!

a good mess

i love the homes i get to peek at in home decor magazines, they inspire me to take care of my home.  however i am well aware that they have been tidied, touched up, and styled by an interior designer.
this photo appeals to me equally.  the photo was snapped at the end of one mom's day.  it's so charming to see the toys laying about, the laundry not quite done, and the dishes waiting to be washed.  it's such a familiar sight.  slightly messy, yes. but also warm and loving, yes?  see more pics from the post at blog seventy tree

sometimes you have to savour the mess, especially if you are a parent, and understand what was behind the mess (i.e. a happy boy playing with his cars).  i have learned to be okay with it especially when kai came into my life. once upon a time everything would be in order before i retired to sleep but not so much anymore.

as i look about my own space at this very moment - ironing board is out waiting for the laundry (sitting in a basket for two days) to be sorted, dishes from today are in the sink, and kai's hot wheels are strewn about the floor, some meticulously lined up and some all crashed together.  and i am going to help kai with his homework right now, the chores can wait.

have a lovely (and messy) weekend!  Enjoy.

first blog crushes

the very first blog that i laid my eyes on was swissmiss, this was just a couple of years ago.  swissmiss is a design blog. the blogger, tina roth eisenberg, writes about a variety of subjects, has an awesome eye for design and some of her posts just make me smile which is enough for me.  do visit her blog here.

then last year i came across birds of a feather, a photography blog which set my mind in motion about doing something with the gazillion photos that i take every year. sarah yates posted a photo a day and i loved her photography.  unfortunately she has ended her blog but she has another one devoted to her wedding photography here.  seeing her photos will get you thinking about renewing your vows or walking down the aisle for the first time, they are fabulous and dreamy!

chicken soup

we had the most delicious chicken soup last night!  i have asked stefan to write and photograph the process of making it:

i love making chicken soup from scratch, it is a very comforting process that i usually do on rainy days when i have some time to pass in the kitchen. today i was home with a bit of a cold so i stopped by granville island after taking kai to school and stocked up on supplies. i have a great recipe for an indonesian chicken soup where this one is based on.

i start with the stock, the chicken is cut up and simmered for a couple of hours with onions, celery, chili flakes, garlic (lots!), ginger, turmeric, bay leaves and star anise. this yields a very hearty, warming stock. i then strain the stock and add a sliced onion, a sliced red pepper, sliced leek, a nice hot chili and some snow peas. pour this over some noodles, top with shredded omelet and you have one comfort food that is absolutely delicious and healthy to boot.
3 bulbs of garlic, ginger and chili flakes give the stock a superbly warming flavor
star anise, one of my favorite spices
the veggies, chicken meat, stock and noodles ready to be combined
the end result, just before being devoured!
if you like indonesian food like i do, check out indochef (also known as henk's hot kitchen), it has all the indonesian classics well covered.
