bridges, botanicals, and a blue whale

earlier this week kai and i spent time at ubc.  it was a lovely day, especially since i had him all to myself.  our first stop was to try out the new canopy walkway at the botanical gardens.  it's an aerial system of suspension bridges that run from tree to tree and its about 50 feet above the ground so you are literally in the trees.  i was a bit tentative and slow.  kai on the other hand didn't have any fear.  we then spent time in the gardens observing the bees working, discovering hollow trees, and getting lost among the winding paths.  we whiled away quite a bit of time here.

 

   

  

 

 

 

 

 
 
 

we then headed to the beatty biodiversity museum which houses the skeletal remains of a blue whale. it is 26m long and took about 2 years to dig it up, clean it, and put it back to together.  kai had fun putting the replica's of the whale's flipper bones together.  such a diversity of species is on display; shells, insects, mammals, birds, reptiles to name a few (the taxidermy on display was too much for me which kai found amusing).  i loved watching kai's expression of awe, which is exactly what the museum hopes for.  if we care, we'll do our share to preserve the earth.
