on friday we packed our day tripping bags and headed to bowen island, a 15-minute ferry ride from vancouver. we left the car at the ferry terminal and boarded the ferry by foot. bowen is a large island but most of what we wanted to explore was within walking distance. bowen has natural beauty and a small town community feel. at snug cove, where the ferry docks, is 600-acre crippen park and that's where we headed, after a quick cup of coffee at the local cafe. we decided to hike to killarney lake which made for a beautiful stroll - we came across a pretty waterfall and a fish ladder. we found a quiet spot to lounge before heading back into town for some drinks, food and ice cream. we lounged some more on the grassy area by snug cove before boarding the ferry back home. it was a blissfully quiet and relaxed day.
on saturday we spent the afternoon by the pool. it was our first outdoor swim (if you have been reading this blog then you already know that the summer weather has just recently arrived in vancouver). and, as always, i am instantly reminded of how much i enjoy swimming. going to kitsilano pool instantly feels like a vacation. i think it has something to do with the (crazy!) spectacular views of the ocean, the mountain, the beach, and the skyline of vancouver across english bay. just maybe.
on sunday we took it easy with a visit to granville island. we had a lovely brunch at edible bc, strolled (i hardly never get to just stroll here!), and grocery shopped. and, kai hit the waterpark which gets high points for its fun factor. during our stroll we eyed some great art pieces that are part of a current exhibit called revision: the art of rycycling.
we bid my in-laws a goodbye - they are visiting with the lovely melanie and family - but my boys and i will visit with them on the main island in a few weeks and then bring them back with us for a few more days of visiting before they head home to the netherlands. for now, back to work for stefan and i and kai heads to camp...
