skåne is the southernmost county of sweden. in the five-plus years that we have been living in sweden, we heard so much about it. in particular, what a great place it is to visit for a summer vacation. so, with our trip to italy cancelled, we took a train westward, then rented a car exploring the coastline, big open pastures, and cozy cafés and restaurants. it was everything we've been told and didn't even think about italy. well, kindof :)
because i am writing this months and months later, i will stick to the highlights, short and sweet. next up, ystad and the surrounding area, in the southeast part of skåne!
places to visit in town:
* stroll the streets and delight in the cute houses (too many pics follow!)
breakfast at soderberg och sara, croque monsieur was perfect as was the chai latte and my boys' coffee
* afternoon drinks and charteurie in the square at up keller ner
* ice cream at frusen gladje, the really good kind

* stroll by greyfriars abbey, from the 13th-century, this red-brick complex, houses a local history museum & crafts shop
* shopping at a shop whose name i cannot remember where i bought dress and then lived in for the rest of the holiday!
* pop into per helsas gard courtyard, where you can eat as well as browse their arts and craft shops
* dinners at broderna m and store thor are worth a try

places to explore on the ystad coast:
* ales stenar is a 1400-year-old stone monument in the shape of a ship, perched on a hill by the ocean. walking on grassy cliffs high above, with the sea below, and the wind howling, it reminded us of our trip to scotland * stop by the marina and visit kaseberga fisk for lunch where we had salmon and herring (again!), visit the shops (i was tempted to buy one of the vintage posters), and stroll through the cute town
* visit the beach at tobisviks, with its freezing cold water, the only way i could get in was with a water fight with kai and soon after i acclimatized; the feeling afterwards is addicting!
* hang out by the rock formations at varhallen tobisvik, they are pretty cool
places to explore on the eastern coast:
* it looked like it could rain at any moment so thankfully we arrived at franskans creperie early enough to be seated under the sun umbrella; not only is it such a cute little spot, the galette was perfection, i wanted to order it again!
* rorum retro shop is a vintage shop selling really cool homewares including the boda noda brand; i bought a herring glass jar but use it to store almonds
* apotekarns medelhavet is an outdoor shopping area with lots of lovely things and vegetables too; better-looking veggies than found at the supermarkets. the coffee cart sold a really good chai latte
* stroll around the kivik art centre, visiting all the sculptures; it was such a lovely time with my boys that you couldn't help but dance in the wheat fields :)
* rorum strand, a cute long and narrow beach with the coldest water; i managed a couple of dips
* for dinner, we ate at the kivik harbour, where i finally found fish soup on the menu; it made up for the fact that without reservations and limited seating due to covid, we were unable to eat at our first two choices, b olssonn friden nor melby klockagard
places to stopover on the way back to malmo:
* horte brygga for lunch, basket of dips and spreads and fish and meat too / almond cake so good!
* a quick stop at mossbystrand for a swim before heading back to stockholm but bring bug spray with you to avoid the teeny tiny flying things!
