kai's passport

kai's new passport came in the mail this week, his third.  that little boy of mine has done quite a bit of travelling!  in his first year alone he went to spain (twice!), holland, and tunisia

melanie, stefan's sister was living in spain at the time (she now lives on vancouver island!).  we both had our babies within two months (me with kai and she with her second child maya) and so who better to hang out with during my maternity leave than my sister-in-law.  i went alone with kai in february 2004 when he was 5 months old (and again when he was 8 months old with stefan accompanying us).  kai was an awesome traveller and spain was the perfect place for a new mom.  the people were child friendly; babes in arms wasn't a big deal at restaurants instead they were more than welcomed.  it always appeared that the spaniards were in slow motion, no one was eager to get anywhere.  i loved sitting at a cafe eating tapas and people watching.  melanie and family lived in gerona, the old city, and this is where kai and i spent most of our days wondering about the streets getting lost.  we visited quaint cities by the seaside. my favourite visit was to the salvador dali museum.

during that second trip to spain, we also stopped off in holland to visit stefan's parents, harm and marion.  it will have been the first time they met their new grandson.  we had such a relaxing time being cared for by my in-laws who are such wonderful hosts.  we introduced kai to extended family and friends, we visited a farm, went for bike rides, and ate lots of yummy dutch snacks (a favourite is fries smothered in mayo).

after stefan left us, melanie and i (with kai and maya) went to tunisia - i am so glad we were brave enough to pick up and leave, it was such a fun time and my first visit to africa.  the people were lovely.  the food absolutely wonderful. it was also a child friendly place, people went gaga over the babies, happily taking them from our arms.  the shopping was fun too!   how i wish i had a huge balcony covered with rugs to lounge on!
